Remembering Betty Schumann

Betty Schumann Ward 1954-2021

Betty (Schumann) Ward, 67, of La Grange, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, December 8, 2021. 

Betty was born in La Grange, Texas on October 9, 1954, to Lambert and Ruth Schumann of La Grange, Texas. Betty attended St. Paul Lutheran Church School and went on to graduate from Reagan High School, class of 1972. After high school, Betty went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Interior Design from the University of Texas in 1976, where she was a proud member of the Delta Gamma Sorority. In 1993, while living in Midland, Texas, Betty enrolled at the University of Texas Permian Basin and earned another bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. During her years in Midland, Betty was active in Junior League and the American Cancer Society.

Betty moved to College Station, Texas in 1994; she worked as an elementary school teacher and a licensed real estate agent. She taught school for 25 years and loved her students throughout her career. She was very active at Central Baptist Church. Betty served as a leader for the Women’s Ministry and Celebrate Recovery, she ministered to many people over the years. Her love for Jesus was evident and she impacted many lives for the Kingdom of God. She enjoyed singing in the choir and going on mission trips. She was an active supporter of Young Life.

After 25 years of teaching, Betty retired to Highland Haven, Texas and soon opened her own Real Estate Brokerage firm, Ward and Associates Real Estate. She served her lake community and led the Highland Lakes Association Realtor Board as President.

Betty was a Master Gardener and enjoyed working in her yard. She had a passion for fixing up old houses and always enjoyed a good “project”. She also never stopped decorating. However, her most prized possession was her family. She loved her two daughters and six grandchildren. She taught them all how to love and serve the Lord and her faith will leave an impact on generations to come.

She is survived by her two daughters: Emilie Galanos and husband, Chris, of Denton, TX; Sarah Kellen and husband, Jake, of Warda, TX; six grandchildren: McKinley and Charis Galanos; Nathalee, Jacob, Jerry, and Jimmie Carl Kellen; sister, Lana Swearingen and husband Tommy, of Warda, TX; niece, Amy Gemma of Pflugerville, TX and nephew, Wes Swearingen of La Grange, TX.  She was preceded in death by her mother, Ruth Kasper Schumann and her father, Lambert Schumann.
