PASSING OF BELOVED COACH

Leon Delbert Moberg Mr. Leon Delbert Moberg, “Coach”, defiant to the end against his cancer, died at the age of 73 at home surrounded by his family on March 22, 2012. He was born November 30, 1938 in Austin, Texas and remained a lifetime resident of the area. Del, having a great love of sports from a very young age, was a player on the “North Austin Lions Little League Team”. They made it to the L.L. World Series in 1951, where he memorably met Cy Young. Del continued his love of baseball into high school, also playing basketball. He graduated fifth in his class from McCallum H.S. in 1957. Del attended Texas A&M in 1958 before accepting a baseball scholarship offered to him from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas. He continued his studies as a member of Phi Delta Theta, playing on the basketball team as well. Del was awarded a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics in 1961. Mr. Moberg took his dual love of mathematics and sports and devoted himself to teaching and coaching. His career, spanning three decades, began at Lockhart H.S. 1962-1967, continued at Reagan H.S. 1968-1979 where he was an integral part of the team that led the Reagan Raiders to the State Football Championship in 1968 and 1970. President Nixon dubbed the Raiders “National Champions” for 1970. “Coach” finished his career at Austin H.S. from 1980-1990. During his tenure there he helped to coach the Austin High Maroons basketball team to a District Championship in 1981. “Coach” served as Athletic Director during the early eighties and as interim principal as needed. “Coach” retired in 1990 as much loved by his students and colleagues for his positive, up-lifting attitude and humor as for his dedication to education and athletics. Delbert Moberg was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Elsworth Moberg and Ruth Moberg (Fosberg). He is mourned by his surviving family: his eldest son Sunny Moberg and his wife Julie, his son Victor Moberg, his wife Shana, their children Dakota and Mason, and by his daughter and son- in-law Saundra and Guy Hailey. Del is also survived by his cousin David Oman and his family of Hutto, Texas. The Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 am, Saturday, May 19th in Smithville at the Buescher State Park Recreational Hall. 100 Park Road 1E.
